The Piano Teacher Reset: Improvisation

The longer I teach the more I realize that piano and music teachers are professional problem-solvers who are doing way more behind the scenes than their students realize. It's more than lesson plans, scheduling and sending reminders about the upcoming recital: it's the energy and time you spend individualizing the experience for each student, adapting to their needs, interests and abilities.

Creativity is the quickest candle to burn out because it burns the hottest. The creativity we pour into lessons, carefully choosing music and activities to help each student fall in love with music? It's an art.

But even creative teachers burn out. And when we do, it's easy to simply turn the page each lesson- the creativity of composing and improvising gets buried on a bookshelf under lesson plans and receipts we need to file for taxes.
